Alice If Alice could summarise all her favourite things into one action it would probably be singing a song about birds while riding her bike, with salty wet hair after an ocean swim, to a crafternoon picnic at an eclectic community garden wearing colourful home-made clothes. Hailing from Bathurst, she has spent the past six years in Sydney immersed in food cooperatives, environmental activism as well as studying ecology. Alice is looking forward to getting out of the big smoke and onto the road, and can't wait to see what surprises it will bring.
Ania Ania's love affair with mushrooms and avocado make her a very happy vego-mite (but she actually hates vegemite...). She likes bikes, curbside 'junk' finds and street art. After two years of volunteer organising on the student queer and enviro scenes in Perth, she's wishing to do things differently and looking forward to hitting the road with like-minded strangers!
Kelly Right now Kelly has dreams about pottering around on her bike. She also craving a challenge. She believes that the journey is as important as the destination. Kelly is passionate about performing and love being creative. She has worked in child care, children’s theatre and have a degree in drama and secondary education. Kelly adores vintage, cooking new recipes and reading books about eccentrics, beats, and artists.
Marieke is finishing up her honors thesis, researching the personal benefits of volunteering and future tourism implications of 'volunteer tourism', this year (2009) and so excited! Marieke loves the outdoors and escapes the city to rock-climb, camp and 'rogain' (orienteering and bush walking) when ever possible. Marieke works with adults with intellectual disabilities, and loves getting to know people and their little quirks. Marieke loves laughing, cycling, reading and exploring small towns.
Matt Matt thinks of himself as a green kind of guy. I am studying Environments and I’m passionate about sustainability, right at this moment I am repairing after a massive 222kms of riding ‘Around the Bay in a Day’ yesterday. I enjoy a lot of things – these include sharing great conversations, experiences, jokes, challenges and food with great people, Otesha offers all of this in one package so I'm excited!
Matt There's not much more that Matt enjoy doing more than playing guitar and writing songs. This unrestricted creative process is his main way of getting out feelings and views on the world. One day Matt would like the songs that come out to reflect a person who feels the joint triumph of humanity over it's short comings and past misunderstandings. This is what he work towards with the mindset that no step is too small to be taken or too large to be undertaken.
Rachael Rachael has studied environmental management and travelled to many wonderful places. At home in Adelaide she studies, enjoys sharing dinners with friends, knitting lots of warm winter goodies, practicing yoga and many other lovely things. She is truly passionate about our beautiful earth, feels a great connection to everyone who walks it and wants to share lots of experiences with all kinds of people to help inspire a more compassionate and sustainable focus.
Tim Tim was born with a practical mind balanced by his zero attention span. He dabbled briefly in civil engineering before finding that unlike school maths, it would require work as well as genius to excel, or even pass. So an arts degree it was, which is just too broad to be irrelevant to anything, and can mean nothing and everything, depending on the angle.
After nearly 30 years of classroom teaching in Victorian & New South Wales high schools, Tony is ready for a change. He hosted an Otesha crew when they rode from Brisbane to Sydney in 2008. He was so impressed by them & what they were doing along the way, that he decided to sign up himself when he had the opportunity. This allows him to combine his passion for empowering young people to be active participants in their communities, with his belief in the importance of living sustainably. He is very much looking forward to being part of the team which is Otesha 2010 & meeting lots of like minded people along the way.
