Tuesday 23 march -Marieke
Finally, back on the bikes. Oh how we missed riding!!! It feels like ages since we last rode our bikes and after our off-road forest experiences they are very dusty and looking unloved. But we do love them so much. It was a hilly day from Bermagui to Moruya and Tim and I had the trailers...I really felt the burn but Tim looked fine. That is on top of Tim running the first 5kms as his chain broke and Alice had the chain-repairer up ahead. Alice played 'bike-doctor' and fixed the chain (very impressive) and they even caught up to us lazily eating in the next town and hiding grapes under bus shelter seats for Tim and Alice to find. The day was long and hot, but everyone did an amazing job (particularly Ania and Tony for riding into town and picking up food for us, donated by the very giving Moruya TAFE coking class). Congo campsite has to be one of the loveliest places I have ever camped. It was so beautiful. The river meets the sea and swimming is warm and refreshing and the beach is wonderful for sunrises and to jog along. I highly recommend it. Quick note: it may sound very energetic to be jogging as well, but if you saw the amount we eat you would understand! Massive shout out to Bruce who donated the funds for our wonderful campsite and brought us beautiful fresh veg from his garden, thank you so much. It was an early night for us all.
Wednesday 24 march, moruya high school, matt sick, David
A bit of a change of plans this morning - Matt woke with excruciating stomach pains, so Rachael and him hitched a lift into town with a guy from the camp ground and took him to hospital, leaving six of us behind to perform at Moruya High School. While riding the 8 kilometres into town the six remaining Oteshians practically went through each scene of the play, discussing changes and character swapping - and did it in 45 minutes, with a trailer tyre inner tube puncture, too! Big cheers to Marieke who played Matt's part as Hopeful Homie. We pulled it off very well & the kids loved it. After the performance we headed into town to check on Matt, still in a bad state and with doctors unsure of what's causing the pain. Luckily, appendicitis was ruled out and something pancreas-related sounds more like the problem, but only an ultrasound will be able to tell us the truth.
Thursday 25th (Tim)Short ride to Broulee, perform at Broulee primary schoolStraight to the hospital to visit Matt the lizard where the Doctor announced, 'I'm afraid we've lost him'. Luckily we found him in another part of the hospital, having graduated from emergency status, yay. We were moving to Broulee, just ten k's away, and beeeaaautiful. Smashed out a pantomime at the primary school, a man down, and answered all manner of questions such as, 'are you performing at the opera house in sydney?' and "What does matt look like and is his backflip on youtube?'. We then settled in to Bill and Marie's huge river side backyard and enjoyed a delightful dinner party. Alice and Marieke headed back to Nowra to spend time with sickie dickie. Legends. (leaving him with 3 awesome op-shop books on mindpower, quotes, and the tricks to becoming a lawnbowls champion)-thank Bruce for letting Alice and Marieke stay the night, you were our Broulee angel for sure!
Friday 26th March - DAY OFF
Saturday 27th March (Marieke)
Yay, Matt is back! I should probably start at the start. Alice and I re-joined the main group for an early morning ride. I went for a 4.30am jog. Although the phosphorescence in the ocean was amazing I kept having images of finding a dead body (as the early morning jogger) so I decided jogging at sunrise is better. Alice heroically put her hand up to carry the trailer as Matt was on the roster and did a great job. Kelly carried the food trailer in my group and was amazing. Despite Tony's best efforts to hold up the other team, they were so fast they overtook Rach, Kelly and I really early. Little swims with jumping fish, riding in bras, and lots of chatting marked our group as the 'girls only' group which was a lot of fun.. Our group stopped often and had a lovely ride of hills all the way. Arriving in Ulladulla meant everyone was finally together again as Matt looked all rested and relaxed after his visit to a big tree. Helen and Andrew welcomed us with open arms, and their kids Mathew, Patrick and Alannah are so cute. Patrick got us all cold water as soon as we walked in the door and was so sweet. Helen produced amazing gluten free pizzas which made everyone cheerful and made me feel very special. It was a beautiful day and I am impressed by everyone putting their hand up for trailer carrying and extra tasks (except for me it seems, I really had a cruisy day). We crashed early to the sound of the waves.
Monday 29th March - Matt
After a medical hiatus in the performance today would be my triumphant return to the dazzling lights of the stage. Some what disappointed by the lack of dazzling lights, I decided to settle for the smoke machine and theme song... which I imagined. The performance felt better than ever and since we performed quite miserably it made me realize how much I enjoy doing our skit in front of eager young minds(our performance was actually quite exemplary although it was hard to see after the smoke machine malfunctioned). Workshops we're a challenge with rowdy yet cluey classes which really tested our ability to tolerate and engage, I was mainly engaged in tolerating. With our schedule clear for the rest of the day we decided to head to Pilgrims Café via the school host, Tim's, directions. OMG, that's right Organic Meal Generosity is what we received from Martha and Pilgrim's staff who filled our bellies with a complimentary meal. The food was, and no doubt is continuing to be, among the finest vegetarian cuisine available in this fair land. I'm hardly a connoisseur however Tim, an self-unproclaimed-yet-implied-know-it-all, gave it the highest commendation and Rach, a 7 year vego, approved of the remark. Smoothies were also excellent.
In case you haven't seen the link yet you can visit the one below for a few shots I've managed to upload along the way.
